doing what you love!

Today my eyes are half open. My husband and I got home from work at 3:27AM and as I sunk my poor tired body into the shower I realized my age and I was thankful to hit the sack. What I also realized is that I never worked so hard in all my life. The great thing about it is I am working for myself. What greater satisfaction is there than to have your own business, work hard and make other people so happy?

Today we had 2 young girls getting ready for a 50's party. They looked great. Another woman was getting ready for a morning wedding on Saturday...and yet another woman was just shopping for 'retail therapy' after an argument with a family member. it is nice to know that I am filling a need, creating a positive atmosphere and making women feel beautiful. Although I am feeling tired, I have never felt so powerful in my life.

happy hair!

If any of you have been reading my blogs, you all know about my hair dying fiasco of 2013. It was a repeat of the hair dying fiasco of 2012 only a different color.  Now, I'm trying to grow out my hair and as most of you know I sport a red mohawk. So growing this out will require patience, understanding and a ton of hair glue!

So, today I have decided to wear my happy hair. What is that? well, I have 12 wigs in a drawer, and when I'm feeling blue, bad about myself  (which I do occasionally) and I need a pick-me-up, I reach in my drawer and pull out some happy hair. Then, whatever one I pull out, I put an outfit on that is just as happy and voila! I feel good about myself, the world, and I'm ready to face the day with a positive outlook. I wonder if Dolly Parton does that, or Wendy Williams? But , really, it's like roulette. I never know what I'm going to pull out, and it's a fun surprise on those days when I'm feeling blah, tired or just not exciting enough.

This morning I watched Lady Gaga's new video on Good Morning America, and it excited me. It was called Applause. Isn't that we all love and what we all crave from time to time. We are always looking for approval, always looking for people to say, 'it's ok' to wear what we wear, or do what we do. Well, today, all I need is my happy hair. I don't need anyone's approval, I don't care if people do or don't like it. I like me. I thank God for me. I wouldn't want to be anyone else but me.

So today, I ask you these questions:
Do you like yourself?
Would you want to be friends with you?
Would you want to be anyone else instead of yourself?

until next time, I hope you enjoy your day as I am. I hope you are thankful for this day as I am. And I hope you are loving yourself, as I am.

Namaste

inspiration and where to find it

Inspiration and where to find it

People always ask me where I find my inspiration to create hats.  Well the truth is, some days I can make them and then some days I can't. Inspiration does not just come at the snap of a finger. Especially if there are toxic people around you, or some life changing event has brought you to a level of sadness.

Every day, it is difficult to maintain a positive outlook, about my body image, my aging face, the way my children turned out ,etc.  As I wrote in my previous blog, it's important to keep up the fight every day. I find it important to surround myself with people that help me stay in a positive atmosphere. That does not mean to dis your friend in need, or to turn away when someone is in a negative mood. It means to gain strength from positive people, and to help lift up someone who is not. If they do not respond, then keep them at a distance. Some people like to maintain a negative mood because that is where they feel comfortable.

I always look for inspiration from my customers here at the shop. The woman who has only weeks to live, but came in to gain strength from me. The woman who has survived cancer treatment and is recovering but has no hair and feels ugly. The woman who found out her husband has a baby with another woman in addition to the 3 children she has with him. These women inspire me. Through their tears, they get out of bed, dress well, take care of their children, and find the strength to smile and make it through another day. That shows how tough women are. And it also helps me put my thoughts in a different perspective.

When I make my hats, I feel like I am making crowns. Crowns of glory to adorn women who have WON! They turned their sadness and trials into POWER! This is what I think of as my inspiration when I make hats I think:

I am a daughter
I am a sister
I am a mother
I am an aunt
I am a grandmother
I am a wife
I am a widow
I am a lesbian
I am a cousin
I am a survivor
I am a Queen
I am a Diva
I AM A WOMAN!

and so with this post, I dedicate my blog to my oldest customer, and friend, but I also call her my mother. ( I have adopted her) Her name is Etta Salman. She is 84 years young and with enough spunk to set any big man straight.  Her class and beauty, good taste and sense of humor will be with me until I leave this earth. She is today and always will be my inspiration. I hope that each one of you finds someone like Etta...a mentor, a survivor...an inspiration.

the daily fight

Everyday is a struggle to remain positive. Just this morning in the news, there is an amber alert, and Heiress' kin is fighting for her 300 million dollars, violence is so bad in Egypt they named yesterday the 'day of rage, and 34 wildfires are raging in Idaho. All of this came to my attention before 730 AM.

We are inundated with stars getting plastic surgery, the Kardashians drama or the Real Housewives of somewhere with their drama, and Deal With It has me so angry that people find hurting other  people to be more important than money. This woman was instructed to tell her husband that the baby was not his. IS THAT FUNNY? all this for some money? never mind that you HURT this man.

Honestly, we must get back to our authentic selves...our inner being. We need to turn off the television, and we need to focus on what is important. My routine is to thank my Creator for giving me the opportunity to help people, for living, for breathing for enjoying my life. I thank my husband for being faithful and for believing in me, and then I bask in the contentment and keep that feeling with me for the day. Before all of the negativity starts pouring in from the world outside. I suggest arming yourselves, my sisters. Arm yourselves with contentment, love, positivity, and gratitude. Don't allow anyone to creep into your mind to destroy your peace. It may be a struggle at times, we all get down and depressed for whatever reason. But fight on!

There is an old proverb about a man who was walking many many miles carrying a large heavy sack. The sack was full of food, clothing and things that he thought he may need. He was so tired. He met a man on the road and they shared a conversation and the man said, 'I am so tired of carrying this , it's so heavy'  to which the other man replied, ' just put it down' ...   simple solution but so great the meaning. If your burdens, worries, 'things' are so heavy, just put them down and TRUST that the things that you need will be given to you when the time comes. Shut out the negativity in the world and focus on what is important. and remember these things:

Health is the greatest gift
Contentment is the greatest wealth
Faithfulness is the best relationship

apply these things to your life today and see if your world changes for the better. Now..arm yourselves my sisters and put on your big girl panties and face today!!!!

The art of coloring..............

Many people know that my hair is not red naturally. I know what you are all thinking...."nooooo...really?"  well...sadly, my hair is very very dark brown almost black. You can tell by my bat wing eyebrows. I started coloring my hair red ( a two part process when I was in my late 40's. I wanted a color that reflected my personality. Well, red it is!!!!

The problem with coloring one's hair at home is that it gets everywhere. And being that I am coloring my hair the color of a fire engine, it gets everywhere really fast. A few days ago, while coloring my hair, I spilled one drop on the floor, which I promptly stepped in without realizing it. Then...I marched down the hallway, praying that nothing would drip off my head when in reality I was tracking it on my toe. I realized when I arrived in the kitchen (which has a white floor) what I was doing. I bent down to clean it up and I put my head into the white cabinets. I cleaned the cabinets and backed up into the refrigerator which now had a red splotch on the front. Ok...calm down. We can clean this up quickly. As I cleaned and backed up on my hands and knees all the way to the bathroom..the bell rang. I panicked. I can't leave it on too long! so I raced into the bathroom tripping on the throw rug and bumped into the shower curtain. What happened after that was like a scene from Psycho. Bell was ringing, I was rushing to clean it off the curtain when it was getting somewhere else. My husband came home from work and said that it looked like I killed a small animal in the bathroom. But you know what? I love my hair color so much, this fiasco will not deter me from remaining the beautiful sun shiny red that I am. I feel like the sun!

That's what I urge women to do. Feel beautiful! BE beautiful! If your hair color makes you happy..then do it! If you need professional service, get a good hairdresser. if you can do it at home, good for you. I hope your bathroom looks better than mine! But most of all, if it makes you happy...then shine shine shine!!!!!

SUPERELASTIC BUBBLEPLASTIC! plastic surgery pros and cons..........

Why are we so enthralled with plastic surgery?  What is the fear of getting older? Are we afraid that by society's standards we will no longer be beautiful?  And for that matter, what exactly is beautiful?

I can understand if a woman does not feel good about herself, the turkey neck just isn't feeling good for her. She wants it taken away....OK, I get it. But to get surgery to the point of looking eternally surprised is something I just don't understand. Lips are getting so large, people can't even smile or form a sentence. Eyebrows are almost to the hairline, and the skin is starting to resemble a plastic toy doll.

I am now 51....sometimes things bother me. Another wrinkle here, another bunch of fat there, oh, and here is a freckle I didn't know I had. But truthfully I am going to try VERY hard, to go out of this life authentic. This is me. The true, true me. No substitutions. I'm not an artificial sweetener. I'm not something that 'looks like' a designer brand, but I'm a fake. No...  I am me, the true artifact. All my bumps, bulges and sags are mine. I own them, I earned them. It takes me a little longer to get ready in the morning. A little more cover up, a little more mascara, but that is only to enhance what is already there. I'm not hiding.  I try to stretch out my wrinkles by smiling more. Yep, that does it. and not only do they stretch out, but it's contagious and other people smile back at me!!

Don't get it wrong, I do not judge people that have had, or are having plastic surgery.  I'm just going to try really hard to love what I have. I'm afraid of the anesthesia, I'm afraid of getting a blood clot, and lets face it, complications CAN happen. So....as Wanda Sykes says "I'M BE ME!"

Put on your Confidence before putting on your hat!

Many women come in my shop and say, 'I'm not a hat person' ...or, 'they look good on everyone else, but not me.'   You can be a hat person if you wish. Anyone can be anything they wish. It all depends on how you feel about yourself. If you put a label on yourself that says, 'I'm not a hat person' or, ' I'm fat' or, 'I'm ugly" or 'I'm short' "I'm old'...then, so shall you be.

Remember, my sisters, that beauty comes with how you view yourself. Do not look to society to label yourself as beautiful. Do not look for approval from anyone else. What you say about yourself or anyone else becomes law in this universe. What you say, so shall you become.

Start each day with gratitude; for life, for love, for the ability to do things. Then drown your mind in positive thoughts about yourself. Label yourself as beautiful, unique, a gift. All of a sudden you will find, you may be a hat person, you may be a confident person, but mostly, you will be a beautiful person. You ARE what you say you are.

finding your sense of style

How can I be my own fashion guru?  How can I find my own sense of style?

Well...if you are tired of looking like everyone else, if you are tired of magazines telling you what to wear....then look within.  What kind of person are you? are you funny and full of humor?  try bright colors and prints. Mix them...wear them and OWN THEM. when I say Own them, I mean, feel confident, feel proud, and don't worry about what other people are saying about you.  Try 2 different prints in the same color scheme, or try one bold loud print and another small subtle print. Try wearing all one color and a kicky pair of heels in a different color. Something totally unexpected.

If you have alittle more seriousness inside you, try wearing white, cream, or khaki. For a sportier look, try browns, olive greens or navy. Finding your style, means finding something to wear that brings you joy. Fashion mags are great when you are at a loss, but if you are creative, and what they are showing doesn't work for you, try vintage. maybe another moment in time captures the moment that's in your heart.

The number one thing to remember when finding your own style is DON"T BE AFRAID! BE YOU! and BE BEAUTIFUL!
